The Players And The Protagonist Want To Kill Me – Volume 1, Chapter 7
Chapter 7: The Fourth Catastrophe Arrives
At 8:00 a.m. on May 1st, Lin Fan lay down in the game pod on time. Today, he wasn’t playing the game alone; he had over a thousand group members watching him!
This was because Lin Fan had boasted to his group members yesterday and promised to livestream the game for them.
“Livestream function activated.”
“Facial scan complete. Initiating《Cain Continent》game. Wishing you a pleasant gaming experience.”
Without displaying any agreements, the game loaded directly, and the first page presented the traditional ARPG character selection and face customization functions.
[E/N – “the traditional ARPG character selection” refers to the familiar and standard process in Action Role-Playing Games (ARPGs) where players choose and customize their characters. This process typically includes selecting the character’s class, gender, appearance, and sometimes other attributes or skills.]
There was only one type of character: Heroic Spirit.
The appearance was that of a common human, with a blue diamond-shaped crystal at the center of the forehead.
The face customization function was basic, permitting only adjustments to one’s own face, with options to either enhance or detract from one’s appearance.
Fortunately, hairstyles could be changed and dyed in various colors.
“You can’t even change the gender…”
Lin Fan expressed regret. As a Heroic Spirit, he couldn’t accept not making himself a little handsome, but the developers didn’t include this feature. Lin Fan had no choice but to adjust the facial details to the maximum.
At this point, the chat in the livestream room was already buzzing.
“This face customization is so basic… But the model details are amazing. It looks exactly like Brother Fan’s face, like looking in a mirror!”
“How do you know what Brother Fan looks like??”
“Hehehe…”
“I’m going to protest on the forum. An ARPG that can’t change genders isn’t a real ARPG!”
“Count me in for the protest!”
“Maybe this is what the developers mean by absolute reality, including making you look exactly like yourself… I have to say, this is hardcore.”
…
While watching the comments in the chat, Lin Fan adjusted his facial features. In no time, he created an image of himself with slightly long, messy hair dyed golden, then raised his height a bit higher, which he always wished for.
“I didn’t expect this hairstyle to look quite handsome. I’ll have to visit the barber shop and get this exact look one day.”
Looking at the naming bar at the bottom, Lin Fan hesitated a bit.
What name would be best? After all, it’s a Western fantasy game, so it should have a Western-style name.
A light flashed in Lin Fan’s mind, and he quickly typed a word.
“Avatar.”
It’s decided!
Entering the game!
Buzz.
Consciousness suddenly sank, Lin Fan’s vision went black, feeling himself truly plummeting rapidly.
By the time he reacted, he was already above a continent, the Cain Continent. Looking down from afar, it was the magnificent Cain Continent with its picturesque landscapes, surrounded by the grand cosmic stars!
Not only Lin Fan, but also the members in the livestream room were deeply shocked by this magnificent scene.
Four supreme and majestic figures surrounded the Cain Continent. Their figures were towering and massive, their faces enveloped in divine light, making it impossible to see them clearly. The Cain Continent seemed like a tiny sandbox before them.
This scene matched the game’s poster.
Lin Fan was secretly surprised, but before he could react, a strong sense of weightlessness spread throughout his body, and he fell towards the Cain Continent like a shooting star.
Once again, his vision plunged into darkness, and vivid, tragic scenes accompanied by stirring background music appeared before his eyes.
Bloody and cruel battlefields, wandering demi-humans everywhere, the weeping Demi-Human Saintess, and the lord of Stomp Territory’s farmland…
This was actually a cutscene!
There were no comments in Lin Fan’s field of vision. Everyone was concentrating on watching this high-quality cutscene, with no time to type on their keyboards.
There was no language or narration in the animation, but Lin Fan and the group members in the livestream room naturally understood the main storyline of their game: to help demi-humans rebuild their kingdom, overthrow the cruel rule of the human empire, and restore the glory of the demi-humans!
A sense of mission arose. Five minutes later, the cutscene ended, but everyone still felt unsatisfied.
The bustling sounds of the environment reached Lin Fan’s ears, accompanied by the scent of grass and soil that filled his nostrils.
He couldn’t help but open his eyes. What came into view was his hands. He raised his hands and looked around, then slapped himself on the cheek.
“Damn! That impact!”
“Damn! The sensation on my face, the visual effects, the sound effects…
If I didn’t know beforehand that this was a game, I would think I’ve already crossed over!”
Lin Fan couldn’t help but feel pleasantly surprised. The sensory experience was so real that it felt like he had truly crossed over into another world.
“But why didn’t I feel any pain from the slap I gave myself… Oh, it can be adjusted. The system defaults the pain sensation to zero.”
Could he still see the character panel?
Lin Fan glanced at the bottom left of his field of vision and clicked on the character icon with his mind, bringing up his own panel.
[Name: Avatar]
[Identity: Commoner (Heroic Spirit)]
[Strength: Common human (Level 0)]
[Skills: None]
[Equipment: None]
[Cologne Empire reputation: 0 (Unknown)]
[Demi human faction reputation: 1 (Little known)]
…
As Lin Fan remained curious, his attention was drawn by a soft and pleasant girl’s voice.
“Welcome, Heroic Spirit from another world!”
Lin Fan followed the direction of the voice and felt a sudden tremor in his heart.
At this moment, standing in front of him was a young girl. The girl had a pair of pink fox ears, and behind her was a fluffy tail resembling a cloud.
Her long white hair reached her waist, and her light golden eyes looked noble and elegant. Her gaze was gentle and serene, like a calm lake. Lin Fan had never seen such a beautiful girl before.
She combined nobility, innocence, loveliness, and charm, producing a strong chemical reaction.
Lin Fan didn’t know what words to use to perfectly describe her.
He stared at the girl dumbfoundedly, swallowing hard, momentarily forgetting where he was and what he was supposed to do.
At this moment, there was only one thought in his mind: could this character modeling, these detailed textures, not be a real person?
The noon sun shone on the girl’s face, giving her an even more sacred aura. She smiled slightly, her warmth surpassing even that of the sunlight.
“Hello, Heroic Spirit from another world. I am Demi Human Saintess Zoe. Welcome to the Cain Continent.”
At this moment, the barrage in Lin Fan’s live broadcast room exploded:
“Damn!!”
“Mom, I want to be an NPC’s dog!”
[E/N – NPC or Non-Player Character, is a character in a game that is not controlled by a player.]
“Does Miss Saintess need any protective knights?”
“awsl”
“awsl 1”
…
“awsl 10086”
[E/N – Please note that “awsl” is an acronym for “啊我死了” (ā wǒ sǐ le), a Chinese internet slang expression meaning “Ah, I’m dead,” used to express extreme excitement or admiration.]
“She’s wearing white stockings!! Help!”
“Tonight I will burn my figurine wife, because only now do I realize how ignorant I was before.”
“The one upstairs, if you don’t mind, you can give it to me…”
“Sob sob sob, poor Saintess Miss, her ceremonial dress is patched… Can I exchange my Nike shoes for Saintess Miss’s ceremonial dress?”
…
Just as all the livestock were happily watching Saintess Zoe in the live broadcast room, a young man in gorgeous armor stood in front of Zoe.
“Damn, who’s blocking my view of the Goddess!”
“Sob sob sob, I want to see Saintess Miss, not men!”
“Um, don’t you think this guy is handsome and a bit arrogant?”
…
Lin Fan snapped out of it, carefully observing the young man in front of him. As one barrage comment put it, this young man not only looked handsome, but also exuded a strong king’s aura, even though he hadn’t done anything.
He had a remarkably handsome face, eyes shining like stars, and a blade of grass in his mouth, giving off a sense of freedom as well as extreme confidence.
“If I’m not mistaken, this should be the core protagonist of the game, Ye Hao, the chosen one in the Divine Selection.”
Lin Fan speculated with the members in the live broadcast room.
“Indeed, just by looking at his momentum, you can tell. He’s just a few words away from saying ‘I am the protagonist’ to our faces.”
“I feel like he’s just standing there, showing off. What should I do? Am I beyond help…”
At this point, the man emitting a kingly aura spoke.
“Welcome, Heroic Spirit. I am your summoner, Ye Hao. Now please choose your Class. Currently, there are only two Classes available for selection: Warrior and Mage.”
Lin Fan thoughtfully watched as the Class selection window appeared along with Ye Hao’s words.
Before entering the game, he roughly understood the background setting of the Cain Continent.
There are a total of four Classes in this world, namely knight, mage, priest, and Warrior. Depending on the Skills and weapons, there will be more divisions, such as the Assassin and Pugilist branches under Warrior.
Knight and priest are not Classes that Common people can freely choose. The former not only requires talent but also needs to enter a specialized knight academy for further study, while the latter must be a follower of the gods.
The Mage class has extremely high requirements, but for players like him, the threshold is non-existent. Next is the versatile Warrior class.
Which one should he choose?
Lin Fan glanced at the barrage.
“Isn’t mage the obvious choice? Mages are rare creatures in Western fantasy worlds!”
“Why choose Mage? Men should wield greatswords and slash away. Those who play with staffs are wimps!”
“In the later stages, one spell from a mage can wipe out a bunch of Warriors.”
“Laughable, can you finish chanting your Magic before saying that? Do you think Warriors just stand there and let you attack?”
…
Seeing the chaotic barrage, Lin Fan felt a headache. He himself didn’t particularly like excessive violence and killing. Elegant chanting and blasting opponents from a hundred meters away seemed more in line with his style.
So in the end, Lin Fan chose mage as his Class. A burst of white light surged around him, and when the light disappeared, his linen clothes had turned into a robe, and he held a staff in his hand.
When he brought up his panel again, there had been changes.
[Name: Avatar]
[Identity: Commoner (Heroic Spirit)]
[Strength: Mage Apprentice Level 1 (1-10)]
[Skills: Basic Elemental Magic]
[Equipment: Common Robe, Common Wooden Staff]
[Reputation: Slight]
…
Lin Fan was in a square, and besides himself, golden virtual shadows had begun to appear sporadically. They gradually solidified, forming one player after another entering the game.
The players crowded the square, chatting, marveling, wandering around, and shouting excitedly with incomprehensible meanings. On the other side, Saintess and Ye Hao’s positions were even more crowded.
Lin Fan looked around.
An exotic town full of Western fantasy style, fresh air, a gentle breeze blowing, dancing tree shadows in the sunlight, and the fragrant scent of earth on the tip of the nose.
Everything seemed to indicate that this was not a game but a real world.
Lin Fan couldn’t help but feel excited, a big smile spreading across his face.
“I’ll go absolutely crazy over this game!”
