The Players And The Protagonist Want To Kill Me – Volume 1, Chapter 73
Chapter 73: I’m Sorry
“Zoe, you’re back?”
At the door, a handsome man wore a gentle smile. His deep blue eyes were like the sea, and his light golden hair shimmered in the sunlight.
Zoe stared at Sivey absentmindedly for a moment, then nodded gently, a charming smile appearing on her face involuntarily.
Entering the house, it was an ordinary common residence.
Not particularly wealthy, but there was a full jar of grains in the corner, and a row of dried meat hung on the balcony.
All this silently indicated that it was a happy and comfortable family.
She put down the basket of vegetables she had been carrying, filled with freshly bought fruits from the town.
Another day had passed.
Zoe held thoughts in her heart, pursed her lips, and remained silent.
Suddenly, she felt warmth behind her. Then, a pair of large hands wrapped around her waist, pulling her into a warm and broad embrace.
The familiar scent of the man made her feel a little dizzy, and her delicate body softened obediently.
“Zoe, did the children give you any trouble today?”
Beside her ear, accompanied by warm breath, came the gentle voice of the man.
“Not really…”
Zoe replied with a complex look in her eyes, saying, “Today, I taught them the history of demi-human countries. One of the children asked me when they could participate in the Awakening ceremony.”
This response was so familiar that Zoe had lost count of how many times she had said it. Her expression gradually became somewhat sad and bewildered.
Because she knew what the man would say next.
The man didn’t notice the unusual look in her eyes. Instead, he gently turned her body around, embraced her, buried his head in her hair, greedily breathed in her scent, and his eyes were filled with fiery love.
Zoe slowly raised her hand and also embraced the familiar man in front of her.
But her eyes were already filled with sadness at this moment.
Yes, how could they not be familiar?
After all, they had been together for a very, very long time.
Long enough to count countless ages.
She and Sivey met time and time again in this small town, from strangers to acquaintances, from acquaintances to lovers, and then from lovers to indelible love.
His preferences, habits, the clothes he liked her to wear, and how he liked to be served, she remembered every inch of his skin, even the ecstatic shouts he made, all carved vividly in her heart.
The familiar scent on his body, the warm touch when she pressed against his chest, and the sincere look in his eyes, were all so real, so real that it frightened Zoe.
But their ending would always come to a halt on this day.
At this moment, the man’s trembling voice, filled with anticipation, sounded in Zoe’s ear.
“Zoe, we’ve been together for so long…”
“Let’s get married.”
The room fell silent, and the silent silence was suffocating.
Zoe lowered her head, tears streaming down her cheeks.
“I’m sorry…”
“I’m… Zoe, what did you say?”
The man’s expression became confused, like a child who had made a mistake.
“I’m sorry… I can’t agree to that.”
“Uh—”
The man let out a painful groan, looking at the girl in his arms with incredulous eyes.
A small sword made of golden light had firmly pierced through his heart from behind, draining his strength. He collapsed to the ground, and blood slowly spread on the floor.
“I’m sorry… I’m sorry…”
Zoe murmured these three words, holding the disappearing sword in her hand, collapsing in the man’s arms, crying bitterly.
She watched as the man’s pupils gradually dilated, felt his body gradually losing warmth, and felt as if a knife was slowly twisting in her heart, bit by bit, vowing to make her taste the pain of killing her beloved with her own hands.
Tears seemed to flow into her heart, turning sour and bitter, ultimately turning into blood that overflowed from the corners of her mouth.
“I’m sorry… Really sorry… Sivey… I couldn’t…”
“I promised you a thousand times, and you died a thousand times in front of me… I’m sorry…”
“I… I wanted to live with you in this small town forever… But…”
Her lips trembled, and she lightly kissed the man’s lips for the last time, whispering:
“But dreams are just dreams, and I can only… only end this dream in such a cruel way.”
“I don’t want to… see you die again…”
“I’m sorry…”
Zoe gently caressed the man’s pale cheeks, sadness flickering in her eyes like struggling sparks in ashes, several times brightening and dimming, finally turning into dust.
…
“Master, she has passed through the second erosion. The energy in the nightmare imprint has been consumed by half.”
“I estimate that there is only one last time left, and then she can fully recover.”
In the room, Lori was sitting in Sivey’s arms, her two tender hands hooked around his neck, her face flushed as she explained the situation of Saintess Zoe to him.
This morning, just after getting up and finishing washing up, before they had even had a chance to eat, they came to Saintess’s room early to visit Saintess Zoe and help her adjust her body.
Just now, Sivey, guided by Lori, once again helped Saintess to complete a comprehension.
He didn’t know what Saintess Zoe had experienced in her dreams.
Even though she was still in a coma, she could feel the unresolvable sadness from her expression.
Could it be that in her dream, her loved ones had died?
Sivey guessed inwardly.
According to Lori, the nightmare imprint would target the weakest part of Zoe’s soul, shaping repeated nightmares.
And the entity that planted the nightmare imprint would gain power from the constantly repeating terrifying dreams until it completely devoured Zoe’s soul.
Manipulating souls and dreams, wasn’t this a typical demon method?
Sivey could guess with just his toes how this thing came about. It was probably that Ye Hao kid going crazy and making deals with those despicable things in the Abyss.
Sivey gazed at Saintess lying on the bed, lost in thought.
But the little maid in his arms was not happy at all. She let out a coquettish hum, and her little buttocks twisted restlessly in Sivey’s arms.
The expression on her face seemed to say “I’m jealous.”
Her fluffy tail behind her even raised in front of her, blocking Sivey’s line of sight.
“Master… hm…”
“Master, look at Lori… Lori is working so hard…”
Sivey came to his senses and looked at the pouting little maid in his arms. Unable to help but chuckle, he bent down to kiss her red lips twice. After the little maid hummed with satisfaction, he curiously asked:
“Lori, can you sense what kind of ability she will awaken?”
Lori shook her head at the question, regretfully replied:
“Master… Lori doesn’t know. Not every demi-human can awaken, and the power in their bloodline is a secret to each demi-human. Only when they comprehend can they have a rough idea.”
“And sometimes, this impression is not accurate, and it still needs to be completely awakened to be certain.”
“I see.”
Sivey nodded.
It seems that he can only wait until Saintess awakens to see. If it’s a powerful skill like Lori’s, then he can’t just casually send Zoe back to Player and Ye Hao’s side.
Moreover, he still has a subsequent plot quest of humiliating Saintess to complete.

A/N:
[Just to mention, as written later, the reason for the scenes in the nightmare is Zoe herself and Sivey’s aura. The Demon can only set the general direction, it cannot see or control, it’s like Zoe dreaming on her own, except that under the influence of the imprint, this dream will continue to replay as a tragedy, to achieve the goal of breaking Zoe’s soul. This doesn’t count as green, right?]
