I Obviously Just Want to be a Minor Character CH.33

Chapter 33: A Night of Turmoil

After settling the most important matter, Su Ming and Xu Qianqian only chatted about some trivial topics.

Of course, there were still important things within these trivial topics.

For example, the broken scale Su Ming had given Xu Qianqian last week had already been handed over to an expert for research. According to the research, this scale seemed to be a bit like that of a rotwater demon.

“Rotwater demons?” Su Ming frowned. “You mean those rotwater demons that live in the sea near the Spiritual Demon Prison and are considered the most common water-dwelling spirit demons in the Spiritual Demon Prison?”

“That’s right.” Xu Qianqian nodded. “In the Spiritual Demon Prison, there are many spirit demons that live in the water, but the most common ones are rotwater demons. They can even survive in the filthiest waters. Of all the water-dwelling spirit demons that have come from the Spiritual Demon Prison into our world, rotwater demons are the ones we’ve seen the most.”

Su Ming naturally knew this.

Not only did he know it, he had also received a few missions to clear out spirit demons that lived in important rivers. He had once gone on a mission with Lei Hao and Ye Bai to hunt down rotwater demons.

These rotwater demons were indeed the most common water-dwelling spirit demons. Whenever there was a non-natural disaster event involving water, the culprit was usually a rotwater demon.

This demonstrated how common these water-dwelling spirit demons were.

“But I remember that rotwater demons’ scales aren’t like this.”

Su Ming pointed this out.

The rotwater demons Su Ming had seen before looked similar to merfolk. They were larger than the average adult human, standing at about two metres tall. They had sharp claws and teeth, and their skin was blue in colour. Although they had scales, they only grew on certain parts of the body, such as the arms, thighs, neck, and face. The scales looked like fish scales, but they were the ugliest kind.

On the other hand, the scale he found was smooth as a mirror and bright as a diamond. It was quite beautiful.

But Xu Qianqian said that this beautiful scale had fallen off a rotwater demon.

No wonder Su Ming was frowning.

“I was also very surprised at first, but after thinking about it carefully, it’s not strange at all,” Xu Qianqian explained to Su Ming. “Once a spirit demon evolves from a lower-level spirit demon into an upper-level one, they will completely shed their old body and become a brand-new individual, right?”

Su Ming seemed to have understood what Xu Qianqian was trying to say.

“So you think that the owner of that scale actually evolved from a rotwater demon?” Su Ming looked at Xu Qianqian. “The mysterious creature that the suspicious group is chasing down is indeed an upper-level spirit demon?”

Although he didn’t know if it was a youngling, since they had confirmed that the owner of the scale had evolved from a rotwater demon, then their guess that it was an upper-level spirit demon could be proven true.

As Su Ming thought this, Xu Qianqian gave another uncertain answer.

“It might not be an upper-level spirit demon that has successfully evolved. It could also be a mutant.”

Xu Qianqian’s words made Su Ming blink.

“A mutant?”

Su Ming pondered.

Xu Qianqian met his gaze and said, “After a lower-level spirit demon has eaten enough blood and accumulated enough power, it will evolve. However, evolution isn’t necessarily successful.” She continued, “If something unexpected happens during the process of evolution, or if the power accumulated isn’t enough to support the entirety of the process, then this spirit demon will stop evolving and mutate in another direction instead.”

In other words, it was a mutation.

A mutation that appeared because of incomplete evolution.

“The spirit demons that appear because of this situation are called mutants. Although they haven’t fully evolved, they’ve also left the lower-level spirit demon category and are between the lower- and higher-level spirit demons.”

Xu Qianqian’s voice clearly entered Su Ming’s ears.

“Not only do the lower-level spirit demons have failed evolutions that turn them into mutants, but there are also those in the higher-level spirit demons, right?”

Although lower-level spirit demons evolved into higher-level spirit demons, this could not be considered the end point for the species of “spirit demon.”

Regardless of which type of spirit demon it was, all of them had three chances to evolve throughout their lives.

The first evolution was from a lower-level spirit demon to a higher-level spirit demon. This would allow them to stand out from the rest of the crowd and truly possess the power to change their destiny.

However, there were also different levels among higher-level spirit demons.

The first stage of higher-level spirit demons was called the danger type. It was merely the initial stage of higher-level spirit demons and the weakest among them.

Aside from the danger type, there were also nightmare types and terror types among higher-level spirit demons.

If a high-level spirit demon danger type continued to consume blood and accumulate power, it would undergo a second evolution.

At this time, if the evolution was successful, it would become a nightmare type.

Similarly, when a nightmare type also consumed enough blood and accumulated enough power, triggering its third evolution, its final evolution, once successful, it would become a terror type.

That was the endpoint of a spirit demon.

That was the final stage that a spirit demon could reach.

Only by becoming a terror type could a spirit demon become the strongest of its kind and rule the entire Spiritual Demon Prison.

At that time, it would have the power to dominate the entire Spiritual Demon Prison and become the true king of spirit demons.

However, this road of evolution was not an easy one to walk.

Not to mention how shocking the amount of blood needed to evolve to the final stage was. Even evolution itself had a chance of failure.

And once the evolution failed, although it could become a more powerful mutant than other spirit demons of the same level, it also meant that this spirit demon would forever lose the opportunity to evolve again and could only stop at its current stage.

This was what was known as a mutant.

This was why Xu Qianqian had brought up this idea.

The mysterious spirit demon that the suspicious organisation was chasing down could be a failed mutation.

“However, a lower-level spirit demon’s mutation shouldn’t be able to attract the attention of the base city’s higher-ups to the point that they would send out their own private army to hunt it down.”

This was what Xu Qianqian believed.

“So, the most likely scenario is that this spirit demon is actually a youngling of an upper-level spirit demon.”

This was the result of their investigation based on that scale.

“This is really troublesome.” Su Ming scratched his head. “Have you already reported this to the higher-ups who gave you this mission?”

“Mm-hm, I have.” Xu Qianqian admitted. “They’ve already started taking this seriously, but the entrance to the Spiritual Demon Prison is about to appear in the base city’s urban area, so perhaps they can’t handle this matter immediately.”

“Then it has nothing to do with me.” Su Ming spread his hands and said with an air of indifference, “I’m only responsible for completing your investigation mission. Everything else isn’t my concern.”

“I know.” Xu Qianqian was already familiar with Su Ming’s character and wasn’t surprised at all. “The countermeasures against the suspicious organisation and the suspected young of the spirit demon are matters that the higher-ups need to decide. We’re only students, so we just need to focus on our investigation.”

“Okay.” Su Ming snapped his fingers with a smile. “Then it’s much easier.”

He had already decided to only focus on the investigation and not worry about anything else.

“Then I’ll be going back first.” Su Ming stood up and said to Xu Qianqian, “Please hurry up with the trade. I want it to be completed as soon as possible.”

“I will,” Xu Qianqian said lightly. “If you have any news or anything you need to discuss, you can contact me at any time.”

“Okay.”

Xu Qianqian then called the butler over to send Su Ming off.

Su Ming left the mansion under the butler’s seemingly respectful gaze, which was actually a covetous one. He returned to the academy.

Everything went smoothly for the next day.

The Demon-Hunting Academy was still as lively as ever. Everyone was busy with their own tasks, and the atmosphere was bustling.

Su Ming, Lei Hao, Ye Bai, An Zijin, Yao Beibei, and Jiang Wanyu didn’t waste any time either. The next day, they began preparing for their expedition.

Some needed to prepare their weapons, some needed to prepare their supplies, and everyone chipped in for the team’s supplies. On top of that, they had a few gatherings, and everyone began to get acquainted.

Well, mainly Ye Bai wanted to get acquainted with An Zijin. Lei Hao had nothing better to do than flirt with those two long-haired and fierce juniors, but those two long-haired and fierce juniors didn’t pay much attention to Lei Hao. Instead, they kept getting between An Zijin and Su Ming, who didn’t want to pay attention to Ye Bai either. They kept getting between them, not allowing An Zijin to stick to Su Ming.

This…could be considered getting acquainted?

At least Su Ming had completely seen through the love and hatred within this team. He had seen through everyone’s ugly faces. In a sense, he could be considered familiar with these people.

In this situation, the day of departure finally arrived.

Night had fallen.

Tonight’s night at the Demon-Hunting Academy was destined to be anything but peaceful.

Tomorrow, when the sun rose, the students here would all depart for Hua Ming District to join the battle against the spirit demons.

Because of this, many people seemed unable to fall asleep, leaving the dorms brightly lit.

At this time, Su Ming quietly left the dormitory and even the academy.

He had received a message.

It was from Xu Qianqian.

“Come over to my place.”

There was no need to say what this short message meant.

When Su Ming arrived at Jinghu District in excitement, he entered Xu Qianqian’s mansion. A large truck was already parked in the courtyard.

Xu Qianqian wasn’t there.

Only a few staff members and the old housekeeper were present.

“The young mistress is preparing for tomorrow’s expedition, but she has already instructed me to hand over this cargo to Young Master Su.”

The old housekeeper said as he opened the truck’s back door.

In the next second, countless neatly arranged magical items appeared before Su Ming’s eyes.

Su Ming immediately smiled.

Tonight would indeed be a sleepless night.
