I Obviously Just Want to be a Minor Character CH.2

Chapter 2: If you can be invincible in this world, isn’t that good enough?

Parallel world.

That was a world that was parallel to the original world, both similar and yet different.

In this world, it was the same universe as the original world, the same planets, even the same history and people. However, due to certain reasons, the development of things had resulted in different outcomes.

Perhaps in the original world, certain species had already gone extinct, but in this world, it still survived.

Perhaps in the original world, a certain country had already been destroyed, but in this world, it had been saved.

In this kind of situation, the world continued to develop, in the end, it became a world that was similar yet different from the original world. This was what was known as a parallel world.

Now, Su Ming had encountered such a situation.

In other words, he had transmigrated into a parallel world and became this world’s Su Ming.

According to Su Ming’s knowledge, this world long ago, it seemed to have been as ordinary as the original Earth.

But here, there were two sides of the world.

One side was the outer side where various life forms including humans resided.

The other side was filled with ferocious monsters.

There was no order there, and there were no life forms other than monsters.

The monsters there fought each other nonstop, feeding on blood, and turned it into a chaotic dark hell.

That was the Spiritual Demon Prison, a place where a fierce monster called the spirit demon resided on the inner side of the world.

Originally, the outer and inner sides of the world would never cross.

Just like the front and back of a mirror, it was impossible for them to face each other.

If these two sides had never crossed, this world would have just been normal as the world Su Ming used to live in.

Unfortunately, in this world, for some unknown reason, the present world which was dominated by humans and the Spiritual Demon Prison where spirit demons resided became connected.

Thus, the distance between the present world and the Spiritual Demon Prison was unlimitedly reduced.

This caused the spirit demons who consumed blood and were addicted to killing began invading the current world, posing an unprecedented threat to all living beings in the present world.

Humans were powerless against spirit demons.

Because not only did spirit demons possess extraordinary strength that humans couldn’t imagine, their anatomy were also completely different from humans. Even the weakest spirit demon could recover from injury at a speed visible to the naked eye even if their body was crushed, showing terrifying vitality.

Therefore, humans were killed, eaten, and bled dry by the spirit demons, humans were considered insects.

Especially some of the powerful individuals among the spirit demons. Its power was so great that they could easily change the terrain and disturb the earth of this planet.

Although the world was still Earth, it was still the blue planet Su Ming was familiar with, under the influence of the spirit demons, many things were completely different.

There were no countries in this world that Su Ming was familiar with. Even cities had changed, becoming one giant base city after another to fight against the Spiritual Demon Prison and the spirit demons.

The city Su Ming was currently in was a base city called Longyao City with a population of over sixty million.

Su Ming had already been in this world for a year.

Although, his parents were still his parents, and the place he lived in hadn’t changed. It was a small four bedroom and two living room house. Even his neighbours and relationships hadn’t changed much. The experiences of his life before seventeen years old were not much different from Su Ming’s memories.

If it weren’t for the fact that the city had changed and his home address was also different from before, Su Ming would definitely have suspected that he had transmigrated into a fake world.

However, although his experiences and relationships hadn’t changed much, his surroundings had completely changed.

For example, the school Su Ming was currently attending was no longer an ordinary educational institution but rather a specialised training institute that accepted warlocks and hunters. It was a talent training institute that specialised in training people to fight against spirit demons, and it was commonly known as the Demon-Hunting Academy.

The talents of warlocks and hunters had appeared because of the influence of the Spiritual Demon Prison. As a result, they possessed special physical qualities and abilities, which allowed them to fight against and hunt down spirit demons.

Su Ming became a warlock who studied at the Demon-Hunting Academy.

It wasn’t just him. Even Lei Hao and Ye Bai, who’ve been friends with him since they were kids, became a hunter and a warlock respectively. They were all admitted into the Demon-Hunting Academy and became students.

The first rule of the Demon-Hunting Academy: Students should take it upon themselves to eliminate and fight against spirit demons, as well as protect the base city and its citizens.

Because of this rule, in addition to their daily studies, the students of the Academy also had to take on certain missions.

Most missions involved hunting down low-level spirit demons that had escaped from the Spiritual Demon Prison into the present world, rescuing ordinary citizens who had been harmed by the appearance of spirit demons, or gathering certain special materials and items.

Completing these missions would allow them to receive various rewards including, but not limited to money.

Su Ming, Lei Hao, and Ye Bai had received a mission today: to eliminate a screaming demon hiding in the storage district and retrieve its wings.

The difficulty of this mission was only C-class. In the Academy’s system, missions were divided into six difficulty levels: S, A, B, C, D, and E. This mission was equivalent to a mid- to low-level task.

After all, screaming demons were only low-level spirit demons. They were common fish in the Spiritual Demon Prison. If not for their ability to fly and their high mobility, it would have been quite difficult to eliminate them. If not for that, this mission would never have reached C-class. It would have been a D-class mission at most.

Even still, Su Ming and his team almost made a mistake and let the screaming demon escape. This demonstrated just how troublesome spirit demons could be.

“Ah well, we can only be considered average students in the Academy. We’re not even an elite, let alone top-tier.”

After completing the delivery for the mission, Lei Hao walked out of the Mission Office while nonchalantly carrying a sword bigger than himself. He responded, “This isn’t an excuse for your carelessness.”

Ye Bai, who was walking next to him, didn’t let him off the hook.

But from the fact that Ye Bai didn’t argue back, it was clear that Lei Hao was telling the truth.

Compared to the average person, the three of them were naturally much stronger.

But in the Demon-Hunting Academy, their grades and strength were not considered high. Even if they weren’t at the bottom, they were always hovering around the middle. They could only be considered ordinary students.

If that wasn’t the case, they wouldn’t have teamed up to complete a C-class mission.

In other words…

“Within the Demon-Hunting Academy, we’re just minor characters, right?” Lei Hao said nonchalantly.

This time, the one who responded to Lei Hao wasn’t Ye Bai, but rather the one who had been keeping silent this whole time, Su Ming.

“Is there anything wrong with being a minor character?” Su Ming suddenly said. “No matter what kind of situation you’re in, you only need to run an errand. You don’t need to be a protagonist and save the world, becoming a hero in everyone’s eyes. You also don’t need to be like those supporting characters who can get sacrificed at any time and die without rhyme or reason. Isn’t that pretty good?”

Su Ming’s argument made both Lei Hao and Ye Bai blink.

Then, the two of them smiled.

“That’s true. It’s dangerous to be the protagonist in this world.” Ye Bai pushed up his glasses, “Let’s not talk about anything else. Just look at those elites in the academy. Every month, they need to complete a difficult A-class mission. Whenever there’s a dangerous situation in Longyao City that requires the academy to send out students to help, they’re always the first to be selected. Never mind the top students.”

“Of course.” Lei Hao said, “Take our Hunter Division for example. This month,a few elite students who ranked in the top one hundred sacrificed themselves during an A-class mission.”

“Isn’t it the same for us in the Caster Division?” Ye Bai sighed. “Last month, a senior who taught us how to use the Twelve Forms went on an A-class mission with a teacher and also sacrificed himself. That senior was known as a good person and was quite popular and talented. Many teachers felt it was a pity that he died.”

This was the cruel reality of this world.

Those who could fight against spirit demons were ultimately not enough.

Whether it was becoming a warlock or a hunter, neither of them were an easy task.

On the other hand, even the weakest spirit demons could be a threat to most lives.

If there were just one or two, it wouldn’t be too difficult to take them down. But if a horde of spirit demons invaded the present world, it would’ve been a massive catastrophe.

Because of this, when spirit demons invaded the present world, the manpower in the human base cities was often not enough.

Such as the missing manpower that had to be drawn from the Academy. This was also why many missions were handed over to the academy and its students.

Warlocks and hunters were both extremely dangerous professions.

But humans had no other choice. They could only continue to fight. Otherwise, humanity’s only fate would be becoming a spirit demon’s meal.

This was what Su Ming replied.

“My wish is to be a minor character and just hang around in the Academy until graduation. Even after graduation, I want to keep hanging around. I definitely won’t end up as a front-line soldier.”

Su Ming said this with conviction.

Lei Hao and Ye Bai didn’t find it strange at all.

This wasn’t the first time Su Ming had said this.

The only problem was…

“Minor characters also have their own regrets.”

“Without any strengths, the minor character is the one who dies the fastest.”

Lei Hao and Ye Bai said at the same time.

It was also true.

Perhaps a minor character wouldn’t be noticed by others and wouldn’t be pushed to take the blame when they were in danger, but if they were too weak, they might die to any boss’s Aoe and become a nameless meal ticket.

Su Ming’s only wish was to only be a joke to those who didn’t know him.

But…

“Can’t I just wait until I’m the most invincible in the world?”

Su Ming smiled at his two friends.

Lei Hao and Ye Bai immediately bursted out laughing.

“That’s right, just keep on surviving. Once you’re invincible, then all your problems will be solved.”

“The only problem is that minor characters might not be able to survive until that time comes.”

The two of them chatted back and forth.

Su Ming trailed behind them, still smiling as he trailed off into his own mind.
