Chapter 46: A Compromise
Suisui turned back, giving Chen Hao an “OK” sign and a reassuring glance, signaling she was perfectly fine.
Chen Hao relaxed. It seemed Suisui could handle this Old Monk Fayun without much trouble. Could it be she’s about to add another bald donkey to her collection of lackeys?
“Huh? The Purple-Gold Alms Bowl didn’t work? Impossible!”
Seeing the alms bowl fail, Old Monk Fayun’s brow furrowed slightly. He realized the situation was more complex than he’d initially thought. Perhaps this girl-like demon before him wasn’t as weak as she appeared.
However, Fayun was stubbornly persistent and, relying on his limited cultivation, believed that the presence of a demon in Duyun Temple was utterly intolerable. He was determined to subdue it. Moreover, with so many onlookers, failing to subdue this “little demon” would tarnish his reputation as Grand Master Fayun.
“Let this old monk see what kind of demon you truly are!”
“Prajna Buddhas, Golden Wheel Dharma Eye, Prajna Paramita Void—open!”
“Demon! Reveal your true form at once!”
Old Monk Fayun formed another mudra, and a golden wheel appeared on his forehead. The wheel slowly opened, emitting a majestic golden light that enveloped Suisui.
The Golden Wheel Dharma Eye functioned like a Monster-Revealing Mirror, forcing demons to reveal their true forms.
Since the Purple-Gold Alms Bowl had failed to subdue Suisui, they would use the Golden Wheel Dharma Eye to force her to reveal her true form. Once they knew what kind of demon she was, they could devise a targeted strategy.
“……”
“Hey, old monk, are you some kind of searchlight? All you do is shine golden light back and forth—do you have any other tricks?”
Suisui bathed in the golden light, completely unfazed, even taking the time to mock Old Monk Fayun.
To put it bluntly, for Fayun’s cultivation level, expecting Suisui to reveal her true form was nothing short of delusional. The gap between their strengths wasn’t just a few levels; it was a chasm as vast as the heavens and the earth.
“Impossible!”
“This fiend must be using some trickery! Very well, this old monk will exert all his strength and subdue you!”
Just as Daoist Wufang had predicted, Old Monk Fayun was indeed stubborn, even rigid in his thinking, utterly unable to grasp the immense difference in power between himself and Suisui.
The monks in Mahavira Hall began evacuating the ordinary people to prevent them from being caught in the crossfire. After all, these were their “golden goose patrons”—they couldn’t afford to lose them!
Of course, human nature dictates a love for spectacle. Even after being evacuated from Mahavira Hall, the crowd lingered outside, craning their necks to glimpse inside, eager to witness the final outcome.
A large portion of them assumed this was a promotional film shoot for Duyun Temple. After all, such dazzling golden light couldn’t be replicated in the real world—it must be special effects. The world of cultivation was, after all, primarily confined to novels; ordinary people rarely encountered it firsthand.
“Daring to trespass upon this sacred Buddhist ground, this old monk vows you shall not leave here alive!”
“Mighty Heavenly Dragon, World-Honored Ksitigarbha, Prajna Buddhas, Prajna Paramita!”
“Flying Dragon in the Sky, go!”
Riiiiiip!
Old Monk Fayun slammed his tin staff into the floor, continuously shifting his mudras and chanting incantations. Golden light radiated from his entire being. Fueled by a massive influx of spiritual energy, his kasaya robe flew off, and the inner garments beneath shattered apart.
Immediately afterward, a Golden Dragon emerged from behind Old Monk Fayun, first as a spectral outline that gradually solidified into a tangible form, and lunged directly at Suisui.
“Holy crap! They’re actually making this!”
“These special effects are insane! This is top-notch Chinese craftsmanship! Way better than that ‘Fortress’ garbage!”
“Are they filming this? Where are the cameras?”
The ordinary onlookers were naturally awestruck by the spectacle, akin to witnessing a naked-eye 3D display. They marveled at what they perceived as cutting-edge technology.
Some even began scanning the surroundings, searching for the hidden cameras or projectors.
The “Flying Dragon in the Sky” was one of Old Monk Fayun’s signature techniques. By channeling spiritual energy into the golden dragon tattooed on his back, he could manifest the creature into reality. Its unmatched power could easily devour demonic entities.
“Impressive display of force and quite visually striking, but still lacking something!”
“For this young lady, break!”
Suisui stood her ground fearlessly, knowing the Golden Dragon couldn’t harm her in the slightest.
She raised her small hand and made a sudden sweeping gesture. A phantom image flickered into existence—a fleeting glimpse of a massive, furry paw—before slamming directly into the Golden Dragon.
Crack—Shatter!
Bang!
Like glass striking steel, the Golden Dragon proved utterly fragile, shattering instantly into golden sparks that dissipated into the air.
“What?!”
“This!”
Old Monk Fayun stared in disbelief as his Golden Dragon was effortlessly shattered, his eyes fixed on Suisui, unable to speak for a moment.
“Old Monk, out of tricks?”
“Tit for tat! It’s this young lady’s turn to strike!”
With a flicker, Suisui vanished from her spot, moving with such speed that the human eye couldn’t even register it, the entire exchange unfolding in mere fractions of a second.
By the time everyone blinked and their brains processed the visual signals, Suisui stood exactly where she had been before, though now in a different pose, arms crossed over her chest, a smug expression on her face, nodding repeatedly at Old Monk Fayun as if admiring something.
“This young lady’s artistry is quite impressive, wouldn’t you agree, Old Monk? You should be eternally grateful!”
“Huh? What?! This is—!”
Old Monk Fayun was momentarily stunned. Looking down, he discovered a soaring… worm! had been painted on his chest.
In that instant, Suisui had approached Fayun and used the vermilion ink from the altar to draw the worm directly on his chest.
“This worm suits you better, giggle!”
“Impudent! Audacious! Fiend, how dare you!”
Old Monk Fayun’s lungs were about to explode with rage. After decades of cultivation, he held himself in high regard, revered for his virtue and prestige. To be so humiliated was more unbearable than death itself.
“You’re no match for me. Just give up!”
“Silence! This old monk will never reconcile with you fiends!”
Clearly, Old Monk Fayun was stubborn to a fault. Despite knowing he couldn’t defeat Suisui, he refused to back down after being humiliated, a classic case of saving face at the cost of suffering.
Suisui tilted her head, studying the stubborn old monk. If this dragged on, she might accidentally kill him, which would upset Chen Hao and make her Papa think she wasn’t a good girl. This was unacceptable to Suisui.
After a moment’s thought, a mischievous little fox grin spread across her face, her two fox tails occasionally intertwining. She had clearly devised a clever plan.
There was, of course, a compromise. But since Old Monk Fayun had offended her, he needed to be properly taught a lesson—a humiliation of a particularly memorable kind!
Fayun: Senior Brother, the Mighty Heavenly Dragon isn’t working!
Fahai: Silence! You disgraceful wretch! Watch me subdue you!
Mighty Heavenly Dragon, World-Honored Ksitigarbha, Prajna Buddhas, Prajna Paramita Void!
