Chapter 53: (End)
It rained continuously throughout March, and at the end of the month, Wen Nian was in a car accident. The process was very dangerous; a mentally ill patient chased her car and hit it for nearly a kilometer along the way.
The fortunate part of the misfortune was that the intersection was sparsely populated in the early hours of the morning, and no pedestrians were seen, so there were no more casualties.
“Auntie Ning is afraid,” Jiang Lin intentionally lowered her voice and said to Jiang Ci, “She’s afraid it’s Mrs. Wen’s doing. Wen Nian’s movements have been too fast lately. Last time, when someone entered her house, it was most likely Mrs. Wen warning her.”
In just a few months, from Mrs. Wen’s older brother to her younger brother, there were constant accidents. It was too frequent, and even Huo Zhenzhen said it was ominous. People who were involved in these events couldn’t help but be suspicious.
Mrs. Wen has never been a simple person, and of course she won’t sit idly by. These violent methods are indeed in line with her style.
Jiang Lin sighed, “Wen Nian still has to fight against her.”
Wen Nian was unconscious for two days in the ICU before being transferred to a regular ward. Ning Shuyue was worried and afraid, and she didn’t trust anyone else to take care of Wen Nian, so she quickly became haggard from staying by her side.
“Mrs. Ning.” Jiang Ci knocked on the slightly ajar door of the hospital room.
“Ah-Ci.” Ning Shuyue walked over and opened the door wider, looking particularly exhausted. “You’re here.”
Jiang Ci asked, “Is Niannian doing okay today?”
“She’s okay, still awake.” Ning Shuyue stepped back to let Jiang Ci in.
On the hospital bed, Wen Nian heard their conversation and turned her eyes towards Jiang Ci. Jiang Ci left her umbrella outside in the hallway before entering. Ning Shuyue walked to the bed before her and Wen Nian asked her, “Mom, can you wipe my face again?”
Wen Nian had varying degrees of injuries to her brain and limbs, and was particularly weak, her voice barely audible. Jiang Ci understood that she didn’t want to appear unkempt, so she turned away on her own.
Ning Shuyue wiped Wen Nian’s face and carefully tidied her hair and clothes. Wen Nian then said, “I want to talk to Ah-Ci alone.”
“Okay, Mom will go out.” Ning Shuyue tucked in Wen Nian’s blanket and asked Jiang Ci, “Ah-Ci, can you watch over Niannian for a while?”
Jiang Ci nodded, “I’m here, Mrs. Ning, don’t worry.”
Ning Shuyue left the hospital room and closed the door.
Wen Nian asked, “Is it raining outside? Ah-Ci, your hem is wet.”
Jiang Ci looked at the corner of her clothes and realized that she might have accidentally gotten some raindrops on it when she was closing her umbrella. She sat down on the chair next to the bed and said, “It’s been raining a lot, but it’s not heavy.”
Wen Nian said, “I always heard thunder when I was in a coma. Ah-Ci, are you still afraid of thunder?”
Jiang Ci replied, “Not anymore.”
A damp breeze blew in from the slightly open window, and Wen Nian looked at Jiang Ci. Tears gradually appeared in her eyes as she said, “Today is the last day of March, happy birthday, Ah-Ci.”
“Thank you,” Jiang Ci said, “You should get better soon too.”
“I… I thought you were always standing behind me, and as long as I turned around, you would catch me… that’s why I left you without any worries,” Wen Nian said with difficulty, tears streaming down her face silently, “But now that I see you about to leave, I can’t bear it. I wanted to tie you down with our past, hurt you… I destroyed our initial feelings. Ah-Ci, I’m sorry.”
Wen Nian pushed Ning Shuyue away, and Jiang Ci was prepared for what she was about to say, but she didn’t expect it to be an apology.
“But even if time could be turned back, and you gave me another chance, I would still choose to walk into the wolf pack. It’s right that you didn’t choose me… I’ve also become a wolf and can’t give you peace,” Wen Nian said, her eyes red, “Ah-Ci, have you made a birthday wish yet?”
“Not yet.” Jiang Ci replied.
“Can I make a wish on your behalf?” Wen Nian asked.
Jiang Ci asked her, “What’s your wish?”
After a moment of silence, Wen Nian spoke, “From now on, I hope Wen Nian will go back to where she belongs.”
The pillow was wet with Wen Nian’s tears, and Jiang Ci stared at the tear stains. She repeated, “From now on, I hope Wen Nian will go back to where she belongs.”
Wen Nian closed her eyes and softly said, “Okay.”
Jiang Ci left the hospital, it was almost evening and the rain had stopped, a rare rainbow hung in the sky.
She walked on the wet road and called Lu Xingxue on the phone, “Where are you?”
The streets were busy with traffic, and Lu Xingxue said, “I’m home. Have you finished visiting?”
“I’m done.” Jiang Ci looked at the rainbow, the sun shining on her skin, summer was coming.
Jiang Ci didn’t celebrate her birthday in a big way, she just had dinner and drinks with Lu Xingxue, and enjoyed their time together more than anything else.
Lu Xingxue had been too busy lately, and Jiang Ci was just frustrated that there were only 24 hours in a day.
“Hug me!” She had drunk quite a bit and clung to Lu Xingxue, urging her, “Quickly, quickly.”
Lu Xingxue laughed, “I’m hugging you.”
Jiang Ci protested, “No, you’re not! I don’t feel anything!”
With a charmingly unreasonable tone, Jiang Ci’s drunkenness had taken over. All her usual composure had vanished, leaving behind a cute and mischievous little tipsy cat.
Lu Xingxue patiently followed her words, “Hmm… How should I hold you then?”
Jiang Ci flipped over and straddled Lu Xingxue’s lap, anxiety mixed with discontent, “No matter how you hold me, it’s not enough.”
Lu Xingxue: “…”
Jiang Ci supported her shoulder and muttered some more. Lu Xingxue turned her face and took her lips, rolling and sucking.
Jiang Ci became obedient.
“Meow~”
“Hmm?” Jiang Ci blinked her eyes, raised her head, and left Lu Xingxue’s kiss. It was quiet all around.
“Your baby might be drunk.” She whispered to Lu Xingxue, “I heard a cat meowing.”
“Really?” Lu Xingxue asked.
Jiang Ci held her ear, “It’s gone now.”
Lu Xingxue couldn’t help but smile, “Baby, you have to take kissing seriously.”
Jiang Ci pouted and was about to say something when–“
Jiang Ci was about to speak as she leaned against Lu Xingxue’s forehead–
“Meow”
“Is there really a cat meowing?” Jiang Ci climbed down from Lu Xingxue’s body, looking around. “Where is it?”
As if in response to her, the cat’s meow came clearly from outside the door again: “Meow~”
Jiang Ci ran out barefoot, and Lu Xingxue saw her suddenly brake in the corridor.
“Yikes! Lu Xingxue! Why is there a fat cat here?!” Jiang Ci ran back in shock, describing to Lu Xingxue, “It’s yellow! Fat! Right there!”
Without waiting for Lu Xingxue’s response, she tiptoed to the door and peered out.
The fat cat was scared by her haste and had already retreated into Lu Xingxue’s room. Jiang Ci held her breath and waited. After a while, a furry head cautiously poked out from behind the door.
“Meow~” The fat cat explored the new territory step by step, treading on small cushions.
It came closer and closer, and Jiang Ci held her breath, nervously standing on tiptoe.
Lu Xingxue hugged Jiang Ci and closed the door behind her.
“In the room, there’s a cat here!” Jiang Ci wriggled in her arms.
“I know,” Lu Xingxue said.
Jiang Ci, drunk and confused, tilted her head in confusion. “You know what?”
“Shh…” Lu Xingxue said. “Don’t disturb it.”
Jiang Ci instinctively covered her mouth.
Lu Xingxue asked, “Do you like it?”
Jiang Ci, still a little tipsy, nodded vigorously.
“When I met it, its previous owner had abandoned it. It was injured when it was wandering around, and its body had only recently recovered,” Lu Xingxue explained.
Jiang Ci listened attentively. “So it’s our cat now?”
“Yes,” Lu Xingxue confirmed.
“I’ll take good care of it!” Jiang Ci exclaimed excitedly. But soon, she became dejected. “But I don’t have the confidence to take care of it properly.”
“Don’t worry, you have me,” Lu Xingxue said reassuringly.
“You have me.”
Under the soft light, Jiang Ci held Lu Xingxue’s hand and nestled into her embrace. “I love you so much.”
“I’m not drunk,” Jiang Ci said. “I love you so much, more and more every day.”
Lu Xingxue was skeptical about “I’m not drunk,” but she replied, “I know, I feel it. I love you so much too.” Every time she confided in her, she received a timely response. Lu Xingxue never brushed her off. The sense of security and happiness filled Jiang Ci’s heart.
Outside the door, the cat saw a glimmer of light coming through the crack and stretched out its paw to catch it. Suddenly, the light went out.
The alcohol had numbed Jiang Ci’s brain, and she was lost in a semi-conscious and semi-dazed state. She felt very hot and squirmed under Lu Xingxue’s touch, almost melting.
Lu Xingxue whispered in her ear, “Baby, we’ve been so busy lately. After this busy period, let’s go on vacation together.”
Jiang Ci grabbed her hand, her face flushed, “Don’t go, I still need you.”
Lu Xingxue kissed her, “I won’t go. You’re so wet.”
Jiang Ci woke up from her sleep and met the round face of a fat cat.
“Meow, meow…” The fat cat walked on the bed, sniffing her nose, and wagging its tail to show affection.
“Hei Yanquan, Hei Yanquan, why do you look so silly, Hei Yanquan? Why do you have such cute eye bags?” Huo Zhenzhen buried her face in the soft belly of the fat cat and sucked hard.
The fat cat accepted it all and let her have her way.
“Are Xiao A’s mom’s dumplings really that delicious?” Jiang Ci stood in front of the fish tank, feeding the fish. “Xiao A has been busy preparing dinner ingredients all afternoon. You’re making him go home and get them, and it’s quite far away.”
With the weather getting hot, Jiang Ci wore a slightly loose linen short shirt. When she lifted her hand, her soft waist was revealed.
Her fair and rosy complexion, gentle and peaceful demeanor made Huo Zhenzhen, who was looking at her, feel ignorant and shallow, thinking only of the phrase “life is good.”
Huo Zhenzhen walked over with the fat cat in her arms. “Of course they’re delicious! Xiao A’s mom is best at making squid dumplings. I’m doing this for my bestie. We’re having BBQ tonight, but she doesn’t eat beef or lamb and doesn’t like pork.”
Jiang Ci sprinkled fish food into the tank. “You always have a reason to bother Xiao A. With so much seafood, it’s enough for Lu Xingxue to eat.”
Huo Zhenzhen pinched the fat cat’s front paw. “Hei Yanquan. Let’s see what your mom is doing. Oh, she’s feeding your dear Mommy Lu, her sweetheart! “
Jiang Ci: “…”
Huo Zhenzhen: “No, Mommy Lu only has one sweetheart, and that’s your Mommy. No one can compete with your mommy.”
Jiang Ci laughed. “What a mess. That’s enough from you.”
Huo Zhenzhen stuck out her tongue at her.
The doorbell rang, and Jiang Ci looked towards the front door. “Is Xiao A already here?”
Huo Zhenzhen: “…No way, he should have just arrived at his mother’s place at this time.”
Jiang Ci put down the fish food. “I’ll go take a look.”
She went to the door, while Huo Zhenzhen was rubbing the fat cat. Jiang Ci heard her mumbling, “You clearly don’t have dark circles[1], why did they give you such a strange name?”
“…” Jiang Ci quickened her pace, pretending not to have heard.
When the fat cat came, as the legitimate wife of Lu Xingxue, Jiang Ci fulfilled her rights and obligations as a wife quite frequently – staying up late often, resulting in her always having dark circles. The first time Lu Xingxue called the fat cat by that name, Jiang Ci was so ashamed that she had a big fight with her all night.
Jiang Ci walked to the door, and Lu Xingxue’s figure appeared on the cat-eye screen. She opened the door. “Why didn’t you just come in? Is the door broken? Can’t the fingerprint scanner recognize you?”
Lu Xingxue’s eyes were as bright as stars and moonlight, and her voice was soft and playful. “Because my wife is at home.”
The courtyard was full of summer vitality, with the sound of cicadas faintly heard. Jiang Ci and Lu Xingxue gazed at each other, forgetting the passage of time.
