Chapter 26
Chapter 26: I, Eagle Lord, am first and foremost a knight
Outside a small house in Dawn Town, a group of players crowded around the doors and windows, ignoring the already packed entrances. Sivey, Demi-Human Saintess Zoe, Ye Hao, and Avatar, along with a few other prominent players, sat in two rows around a long table. Sivey sat alone on one side, exuding an air of cold disdain, perfectly embodying the image of a ruthless and arrogant antagonist.
The main characters and player representatives faced him as if confronting a formidable foe, their eyes filled with vigilance and a touch of fear, like facing a dragon ready to strike.
“I have no intention to attack Dawn Town,” Sivey reiterated, his voice cold and disdainful towards this small piece of land. Despite sitting alone, his presence weighed heavily on the players opposite him.
“Now, I’ll give you a chance to negotiate with me,” he continued. “The Orcs are attacking the Black River Territory, and I intend to lead troops to support them. I hear you demi-humans have a group of fearless foreigners. Let me borrow them.”
“No!” Demi Human Saintess Zoe’s voice was firm and cold as she rejected Eagle Lord’s unreasonable demand outright. “I will never agree! You’re asking the Heroic Spirits to be sacrificial pawns, to die needlessly. You, wearing the skin of a demon!”
Sivey rose slowly at Zoe’s defiance, his gaze fixed on her with an expressionless intensity. Beneath her apprehensive gaze, he leaned closer, his deep blue eyes glinting with a chilling light.
“Listen carefully,” he said in a low, menacing voice. “I am giving you an order, not seeking your consent.”
The threat in Sivey’s words sent a shiver down Zoe’s spine. She hugged herself helplessly, her voice trembling. “H…how can this be?”
“You seem to misunderstand,” Sivey replied coolly. “Dawn Town belongs to my Eagle Territory, not your demi-humans.”
“But…but this land was once the kingdom of demi-humans… I only wish everyone could have a place to call home. Why is that such a difficult request…”
Sivey chuckled incredulously. “You’ve already been annexed. All land now belongs to the Cologne Empire. I’m not here out of charity; I’m not obliged to grant your people a small town to settle in.”
“You’re quite endearing in your naivety, my dear Saintess.”
Sivey’s lips curled slightly as he lifted Zoe’s delicate chin with his hand, locking eyes with her beautiful golden gaze.
“Or,” he murmured seductively, “if you were to pledge yourself to me, not only would I spare those foreigners from harm, but I could also promise to give Dawn Town to you. How does that sound?”
“Outrageous!”
Ye Hao couldn’t bear it any longer, shouting angrily as he charged towards Sivey. Zoe meant everything to him, and he couldn’t tolerate anyone insulting her.
“Protect Sister Saintess!” Ye Hao’s cry spurred the other players into action, rushing to shield the bewildered Demi Human Saintess Zoe. The system prompt for completing the quest had already appeared. Sivey smirked satisfactorily, then swiftly turned and slapped Ye Hao in the face as he lunged at him.
At level 20 and with his Breakthrough Skills long expired, Ye Hao was sent flying back even faster than he had rushed forward.
Gracefully, Sivey retrieved a white handkerchief from his pocket, wiped his hands, and spoke with a smile, “I won’t waste my time with you. Either all the foreigners serve as cannon fodder for me, and I can agree to one condition from you, such as granting you Dawn Town, or wait for my army to conquer it. You have ten minutes to decide.”
With that, Sivey glanced nonchalantly at the silent crowd and calmly left the room.
After a tense silence, a hesitant voice broke the stillness. “Brothers, am I mistaken, or did Eagle Lord just use a stocking to wipe his hands?”
“Yeah… a white stocking, and it looks worn…”
“I can’t handle this; I might faint…”
…
While being cannon fodder wasn’t too daunting for players, knowing they could resurrect, dying in vain with no reward and losing levels was another matter. After deliberation among the player representatives and despite Zoe’s objections, they reluctantly agreed to Sivey’s terms.
“We agree to your conditions,” Avatar stated calmly, looking directly at Eagle Lord. “But you must promise to grant Dawn Town to us and swear not to reclaim it before the gods.”
“Is this your decision or Saintess’s?” Sivey asked with interest.
“It’s our decision, supported by Saintess,” Avatar replied firmly.
“In that case,” Sivey nodded, placing his fist over his chest. “I may not be a man of faith, but I swear on my honor as a knight that if you foreigners give your all in the upcoming battle, I will transfer ownership of Dawn Town to you afterward.”
“We’ve heard rumors that Eagle Lord isn’t known for his adherence to knightly honor,” Avatar added cautiously.
Sivey’s expression shifted, surprise mingled with seriousness. “Where did you hear that? I am first and foremost a knight, then a lord, and finally a Count.”
With solemnity, Sivey placed his hand over his chest once more, declaring, “I pledge my life to uphold the honor of a knight.”
The players stared incredulously at the shameless Eagle Lord before them, their hearts filled with disbelief and frustration.
This level of shamelessness was beyond comprehension.
Just three days ago, he hadn’t uttered such words.
Yet, despite their shock, the players found themselves at the mercy of the situation. They reluctantly accepted the Eagle Lord’s oath, knowing they had no choice.
For now, they needed to buy time. As they grew stronger, they vowed to rise above such manipulative figures, whether it was Eagle Lord or Grey Hawk Lord.
Suddenly, every player’s panel received a system prompt:
[Attention all players: Special quest obtained. Follow Eagle Lord Sivey Golden Lion to assist the Black River Territory, currently under Orc attack. Quest accepted. (Reward unknown)]
“What in the world? Since when can bosses give us quests?”
“Are we heading into battle?”
“We’re just cannon fodder…”
“So what if we are? It’s all part of the game, right?”
“Hoorah! Hoorah!!”
“Facing Orcs? I’m feeling this much excitement just five days into the game?”
“Accept, accept, damn it. This NPC is top-level. It beats grinding trees all day long, unlike some lame protagonist ordering us around.”
…
Meanwhile, Ye Hao, nursing his wounds, muttered quietly, “…(T_T)”
Did he say that so loudly out of fear of being left out? What’s wrong with grinding trees anyway? Weren’t they all excited when accepting the quest?
